As the New Year begins it is natural for us to focus on 2014 and reflect on the year that has just ended instead of seeing January as just another month, or today as just another day.

We should give ourselves an opportunity to make all those improvements that for years we have been telling ourselves we need to make and to convince ourselves that this is the year to dispel those doubts that often hold us back. This is the year to rise above the clouds and attain the clarity we have always dreamt of… Once again we will write down all our goals, but this time we will reread them with a true sense of conviction: this time we really will do it.

I have chosen photographs by self-taught photographer Kim Høltermand (1977) in an attempt to illustrate the sense of uncertainty that arises when we face a new year that has just invited us to partake in another 365 brand new days. Solitary, desolate landscapes where the use of light and fog emphasise the presence of the location’s few elements.

Scenes that are capable of creating a set of conditions in which we can identify the landscape with our moods and with the bright future that awaits us on the other side if we continue to reveal the unknown as we continue our onward journey.

It is possible that this Danish graphic designer and lover of Sweden decided to alter his trajectory early in 2007 while he was listening to his favourite music – Sigur Rós, Moby, Trentemøller, Hammock, Max Richter…

Kim now advises other aspirants to choose their own path, to have confidence in their talent and to remain true to their own personal style even though not everyone will like it and even if they don’t get it right the first time around…

And why should this not be so? It is very possible that all our previous setbacks have helped us select the path we will take in 2014 to develop our very own anti-fog glasses and to decide which is the safest rock to cling to until the tide turns and we can reach the shoreline.

Best wishes for 2014 and don’t stop trying, maybe this time it will happen…
