OSAMU YOKONAMI. Photographs that evoke emotions

Author: Luisa Bernal

Section: LAB

Date: 11.2013

What happens when you dress one person the same as seven others and place them all beside each other in an infinite landscape? What happens is that the individual disappears and when you look at the image all you see is the beauty of the composition as a whole. The personality of the individual components disappears and almost immediately our imagination begins to conjure up stories as to how a group of uniformed adolescents who look like they have just finished school for the day have ended up here amidst the woods, mountains and lakes…

As though we were observing film stills, every image of the Asembly series Osamu Yokonami is capable of projecting a different emotion, be it the desire for adventure, the surprise of discovery, the enthusiasm and energy of adolescence, the sense of freedom that suffuses us when faced with an unexplored landscape, playtime…

Japanese photographer Osamu Yokonami (Kyoto, 1967) began taking pictures with a camera his parents gave him, copying images he had seen in magazines. Years later he graduated in Visual Arts in Osaka and, before dedicating himself to his own projects, worked for Bunka Publishing Bureau. He currently combines personal projects with occasional advertising and magazine jobs.

A lover of analogue photography and a reluctant user of Photoshop, Osamu has discovered beauty in innocence and purity, a fact that in recent years has led this to lean towards photographing children and adolescents.
