I like food and I love fashion, just as most of you. Typically, these two goodies don’t go together, making hips such as #YouDidn’tEatThat trendic topic all over the place. However, once in a while someone appears and achieves the perfect combination between both. First was the lobster dress by Maison Margiela and now is her. She is Gretchen Röehrs, a fashion illustrator based in San Francisco that has turned into an Instagram rock star thanks to her sketches. Why are them so special? Well, she uses real food to do them, and that’s kind of amazing. She specializes in veggies and fruits, products with vibrant colors that catch the eye and are good for the body. Such a healthy trend to follow! However, is not like she doesn’t like junk food. In fact, macaroons are her next project!

Gretchen Röehrs started working in the fashion industry in New York, moving to San Francisco to pursuit her dream of becoming an illustrator, which was far away from these yummy pictures. She studied Fashion Design and learned to draw formal academic sketches, so this foodie idea started just as a way of having fun. In fact, it all began as a joke for a friend who missed eating fresh food in winter, turning into a cool bold business that is making her fame spread like wildfire.

Now she has tweaked the way she draws, building up a connection between food and fashion that goes beyond color. It’s about shapes, volumes and dimensions, turning tasty products into something pleasing to the eye (and the palate). She can do anything, from turning an oyster into an Alexander McQueen party gown to transforming a banana peel into a perfect fit palazzo.

She gets inspired by colorful weird shaped fruits, flea markets and funny looking veggies. Food is her starting point, the main character of her art and the spotlight of the drawing. A plain eggplant is enough to make her illustrations come to life. The only thing left are a few delicate doodles, some cute faces and her amazing ability of turning everything into high-fashion.

Many illustrators are trying to get the spotlight, but she managed to stand out among all of them. Nobody told her not to play with food, so she kept doing it until it became her adult job. She’s not only created amazing mouth-watering drawings, but she has taken #foodporn to the next level. With knifes used as paint brushes, veggies have never been so chic. She only has one unresolved matter: turning butter into art. We will see.
